In Vietnam everything is tightly controlled by the government. Visas are very difficult to get and the process almost amounts to extortion. Each visa is connected with a definite project which the government dictates the incoming Maryknoll person will work in. There is little flexibility.
There is a large and active Catholic church in Vietnam, but Maryknollers are strictly forbidden from involvement with the Catholic community.
