Maryknoll has priests and brothers (the Maryknoll Society), sisters (the Maryknoll Congregation), lay missioners (Maryknoll Mission Association of the Faithful), flexible-term members (Maryknoll Affiliates), and now we are seeing more and more of a new group we are calling Maryknoll Partners. These are people who do not become formal members of Maryknoll but work with us in areas where we have common values.
For various reasons, Maryknoll cannot or chooses not to do certain types of ministry. But often that ministry is extremely important and so we will support and enable others to do the work we don't do ourselves. We see it as promoting mission and carrying out the work of the gospel without necessarily being the hands-on people. In this regard we often now speak of ourselves as enablers in addition to being doers.
In 2002, Maryknoll in Asia has signed formal partnership agreements with the Philippines Catholic Lay Mission Movement and with the Quebec Foreign Missions. Eight of their personnel are now working with Maryknoll in Thailand, and more partnerships are anticipated.
