Maryknoll Partners in Cambodia

Maryknoll partners are organization or individuals who work closely together with Maryknoll. They are not members of Maryknoll, but they share the same vision and goals, and we assist each other in the development of Cambodia and the spread of the Good News.

For the second time, Maryknoll this year (2001) is "partnering" with Notre Dame University in the United States as a host for two Notre Dame students coming to Cambodia to learn about life and ministry in a developing country and to offer their time and energy and skills to that development.

Amy Braun and Whitney Thompson arrived 23 June and will be with us for eight weeks. After a week of orientation and meeting the Maryknoll people and their ministries, they will begin teaching summer courses in English at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.

Studying Khmer with Vuthy 29 June 2001

Part of any experience in another country is interacting with the local people, and language is needed for that as well as just for getting around, doing simple shopping, and just feeling more comfortable. Here Amy and Whitney are studying basic Khmer, the Cambodian language, with Vuthy, a patient friend of Maryknoll who has heard his native tongue mangled by many Maryknollers over the years.

We celebrate all the Maryknoll birthdays here in Phnom Penh, partly as an excuse to have ice cream and cake, and today was Jim Noonan's birthday. He's in the middle in back, with Mary Little on his right, and Rachel Smith, the Notre Dame student coordinator, on his left. In front are ND students Whitney Thompson and Amy Braun, and seminarian Casey Sterr. Whitney is leaving next Sunday so we had a little goodbye for the three of them who have been with us for the summer.
