Maryknoll in Cambodia

Girl Guides on Women's Rights Day

Women's Issues

Maryknoll doesn't have any personnel here who would be described as working full-time in women's issues, but all of us are closely linked to those issues and the plight of Cambodian women because of the special impact on women of AIDS, disabilities, poverty, community health, etc.--all the "official" ministries we're involved in.

This year International Women's Day was celebrated in Cambodia with a special emphasis on women's rights, particularly the right to not be the objects of violence.

Deaf and blind members of CDPO

For the march celebrating International Women's Day, participants gathered in front of the Cambodiana Hotel.

Helium balloons to mark the day

As the march began, helium balloons with messages about women's rights were released into the sky.

Maryknoll sisters at the march

All four of the Maryknoll sisters in Cambodia participated in the march to Wat Phnom.

The march passes the royal palace.

The official welcome ceremony

The head of the ministry for women gives an official welcome. There were NO speeches! It was wonderful!

A drama about domestic violence

A short drama about violence against women in the home kept the attention of the crowd.

The closing activity on the stage

The closing activity showed women in various roles in society and encouraged women to be involved in every part of the society.

Wheelchari Race for disabled people

After the main program finished, several games were held. Here some of the physically disabled people race in wheelchairs.

Pot Carrying contest

To test the traditional village skills of rural Cambodia, women raced carrying large pots of water on their heads.
