These are ordinary men and women, including some sisters, brothers, and priests, who are interested in mission and want to promote it. They do not sign up specifically to go overseas with Maryknoll but some of them have worked in mission areas as lay missioners. And some of them do go overseas but for shorter terms--usually one to three months--than the lay missioners in the MMAF.
