Let's be blunt. If your parish members want to do "hands-on" outreach, Haiti or the Dominican Republic are MUCH closer. Cambodia is literally half-way around the world. Shipping of donated goods is nearly prohibitive. MONEY, in the hands of experienced and reputable Catholic missioners, or other humanitarian agencies of your choice, is much cheaper to send than most of the items direly needed by the poorest of the poor in Cambodia.
FOOD is relatively easy to produce in Cambodia, if only the war-crippled farmer could get around, if only the blind ones can learn to find their way, if only the deaf ones could learn today's best tips for agriculture or aquaculture . . . and if only their children could survive birth and the delicate years of infancy to join in the family plan for a respectable farming future.
More NGO's Probably Not Needed
There is a well-organized network of outreaches already working hard in Cambodia, working with each other as well as fulfilling their mission visions. There also are instances of indidivual people or families setting up their own cherished projects to help out in this country. In general, the need is not so much for new outreaches but for ongoing support of those which are already in place, making a serious difference.
Parish "Twinning"?
The organizational differences between USA Parishes and the few Catholic communities in Cambodia are radical. The "twinning" model working well in South America and elsewhere may or may not be effective here. Direct support by a parish of organizations such as Maryknoll, JRS, or CRS seems to be a best first step in reaching out to the people of Cambodia. The whole purpose of this site is to be an ongoing tool to help us learn what we can do.
